Large steam condensing heat exchangers often make use of ferrule
fixed tubeplates whereby the tube-to-tubeplate seal is performed
using packing rings which are compressed by the screw-in
ferrule. This has two major advantages. Firstly, tubes can
expand and contract as they heat and cool, a process which could
otherwise cause premature failure due to stress cracking.
Secondly, worn or failed tubes can be replaced individually more
easily than would otherwise be the case.
Condenser ferrules are generally made to order and can be
ordered with fitting tools. Available materials include Naval
Brass (CZ112), 90/10 Copper-Nickel (CN102), 70/30 Copper-Nickel
(CN107) and 66/30/2/2 Copper-Nickel (CN108).
