In many heat exchanger applications it is necessary
to extend the surface of the tube to create an enhanced heat
transfer capability.
Some methods of manufacture, such as vacuum brazing, do not support
the use of dissimilar materials and other methods such as bullet
expansion are not always suitable for certain metals (such as
titanium due to their elastic cold forming properties) or tube types
(such as internally finned tubes). It is also sometimes unacceptable
to change the specification of the base tube through deformation
(increasing its size to create the mechanical bond with the fins).
Wire wound fins have limitations of material choice and the contact
characteristics of glued fins can impair heat transfer capabilities.
