The reliability and performance of many diesel locomotives can
benefit from improving the performance of the engine cooling
system. This can improve fuel consumption; reduce downtime
caused by overheating and save money on maintenance costs.
‘Elfin’ extended surface
heat exchanger tubes have been proven in service and provide an
ideal cooling solution for the worlds traction industry, where
excessive vibration, temperature extremes and air side fouling
are always a consideration and are areas where performance
improvements are desired.

The ‘Elfin’ system applies a fin to a heat exchanger tube which
requires neither, mechanically expanding or solder bonding the
tube to the fin. This process allows for the design and
manufacture of either a completely new heat exchanger concept or
more importantly the manufacture of a size for size replacement
unit that may out perform the existing oil or jacket water
radiator, due to improved thermal duty. Further more the tube to
tube plate jointing method is designed to overcome problems of
excessive vibration. |

The method of construction supports the use of hard materials.
‘Elfin’ radiator panels are usually manufactured to allow
dismantling and can be power washed without damage to the fins,
should air side fouling take place. The leading face of the heat
exchanger is always a fin, protecting the tube from impact
damage.
Replacement panels from OEM’s have in the past proved to be
expensive, on unacceptable long lead times and subject to
minimum order quantities. Applied Cooling Technology recognise
the importance of the opportunity presented to redesign coolers
using ‘ElfinBlock’
finned tubes, offering the market a cost effective replacement
cooler that is available on short lead times or even ex-stock.
